Leslie Shershow is not only my beloved girlfriend but also a tremendously skilled and talented teacher, jeweler and metalsmith. Her recent art jewelry series, Romantic Tendencies, explores varying ideas of natural beauty and man-made landscapes.
From Leslie’s artist statement:
“I feel conflicted by my own perception of natural beauty. I get a fuzzy feeling every time I see a palm tree, and I almost cried the first time I saw a crystal clear, teal-blue ocean. Yet I have felt disappointment when a place is not as beautiful or ‘authentic’ as my imagination has promised.
“Many of my perceptions of nature have been shaped by institutions like Disneyworld – a swamp that has been transformed into a pastoral play-land. Fabrications like this shape our perceptions of what is natural and what is beautiful. They promise a wilderness, which hasn’t existed since the first human stepped into it.”
The catalogue is available for purchase in her online shop.
